Books

Author: Scarlett Thomas

I’ve read two awesome books by an English female author named Scarlett Thomas. I have not read anything by a woman in a very long time and mpw it just feels refreshing to read something by one.

The first book I read by Scarlett was her latest book to date, The End of Mr Y, I picked this while browsing a Waterstones library and only picked it up because I found a quote by Douglas Coupland on the back of the it praising the book!

The End of Mr Y is a cool novel about a parallel world of thoughts called the Troposphere. It is a world that is created by the collective thoughts of all creatures that have lived on Earth and in which those who access it can travel in time and space. The book features awesome characters with extreme opinions on fate, god, and thought. I thoroughly enjoyed the End of Mr Y and thought that it was almost like a blend of a Douglas Coupland and Dan Brown.

The second book I read by Scarlett is called PopCo, it is a book about about a toy company, evil corporations, and an unbroken code for a hidden treasure. In addition to the loads of stuff on cryptography, the book talks about fitting in society, religion, and the manipulation of the public’s mind by branding.

I enjoyed The End of Mr Y much more than PopCo, even though both were extremely smart and fun to read. The copy I got for the End of Mr Y was awesome in that it was painted in black from all the sides so that it looked like a book with a curse, just like the subject matter of the story.

I highly recommend Scarlett Thomas for anyone looking for contemporary original fiction.

Update

Live blogging this from bed, today was much better than yesterday, not
*magically* better, but just better. Read some more of PopCo, less
than a quarter of the book is left. I've read some bit of the 'legal
guide for web development' early morning and some of the 'essential
actionscript 3.0'. My perfect book combination is legal, web
development, contemporary fiction.

I posted about Pizza Express on the Omani Cuisine, that place is awesome.

PEIE is having a seminar at the intercontinental tomorrow evening on
the environment and manufacturing, I am going to attend it.

Bad Week Start

Live blogging this from bed. I'm exhausted, my head hurts, my back
hurts. I had a long day at work, a certain project with the Ministry
of Environment is haunting me, I'm not having fun. I didn't spend much
time online today. Was supposed to update the Omani Cuisine but just
got too tired, i'm too tired to do anything, spent the last half an
hour on bed reading PopCO. It's not 10pm yet but I think I'll just try
to fall asleep. I hope I wake up magically to a better tomorrow in the
morning.

I’ve been booked by Amjad to do the following:

The task:

# Pick up the nearest book.
# Open to page 123.
# Locate the fifth sentence.
# Post the next three sentences on your blog and in so doing…
# Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

Loads of books are scattered all over me in my room, I’m currently reading three books these days, the most interesting I think is the one I picked, it is a novel called ‘PopCo’ by Scarlett Thomas, she is a new favourite author of mine, I’m going to blog about her when I finish reading PopCo. Here is the excerpt:

But try explaining that to a woman who thinks that all men are out for one thing and won’t respect you if you ‘give’ it to them. I wonder what Esther would say? Probably not that, at least. But I still won’t tell her.

Hmmm, that excerpt doesn’t tell much about the book, PopCo is a wicked book that combines Douglas Coupland with Dan Brown. Will tell you more about Scarlett later.

I am tagging MMK080, Amnaa, yousuf, Nightface, and Andy.
