The Oman Web Awards Scam Hits Again

February 23rd, 2007 | Posted in Events

The Oman Web Awards 2006(?) was held on Friday the 16th of Feb 2007, we expected it to be just like the first OWA, a total scam, so we decided not to participate… but instead of just bitching about it, I decided to do something this time.

As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them – and so I did. When I heard the event was going to run again I decided to participate as a judge. I wrote a little letter pimping myself saying that I am the best judge they could ever have and that I’m looking forward to help out with this event. I sent it by fax, followed up after a couple of days with a phone call and they said that it’s cool and that I’m in.

The deadline for making all the submissions passed without me hearing from them again, so I called up asking about what happened, and they told me that the judgement process is going to be divided into two stages, the initial jury decides the scores and then another group must validate those scores. They put me in the validation team, which I thought was great because I was going to have the final say as the validation is the final level in the decision making process.

A week before the awards I got a call from ABS telling me that I was going to get the scores to be validated sent by fax now and that the instructions on how to carry the validation process will be sent by email. I got the scores of three of the jury members for all the websites they judged. It was a very long list of websites with numbers next to them. I’ll quote to you the relevant part of the email I got:

The validation process is as follows.

1. We have sent the hard copies of the evaluation duly signed by juries

2. Once you receive it please log on to http://www.absoman.com/owaeval/

3. Please log in to each Jury’s account with the login information which has already been sent to you in my previous mail.

4. Compare the online marks with the hard copies and verify that both the entries are the same.Incase of any change in the scores, please make a note of that, and you can consider the marks on the hard copies as the valid score as it is duly signed and approved by the juries.

5. After the validations are done kindly fax back the copies to us on 24499628.

This process is to ensure that a non biased evaluation has been taken place in the Oman Web Awards 2006.

OK, you might not have gotten it, all what the validators are supposed to do is: Compare the online marks with the hard copies and verify that both the entries are the same. I did not get it instantly, I read it a couple of times before I realised that I am going to guarantee non-bias by making sure that a print out of the scores is the same as the one on the screen. I called up asking about what I’m supposed to do exactly, the woman on the phone told me, “Sir, you have to check your email, click on the link, log-in using the usernames you got, and validate that the scores on the screen are the same as those on the paper…”.

My instant reaction was: WTF?! But I didn’t tell her so, I politely hung up. I checked the scores of the validators, the first and second sets were by two Indians, while the majority of the websites were bilingual at least, or completely in English, a significant number still were in Arabic, I did not understand how someone who does not speak Arabic could ever play the role of a jury to rate websites that had no English content.

The third set of scores I got was the funniest, the fax had “Nawras” written all over the letter’s heading. The third jury member was an employee at Nawras, which was also a contestant, I quickly checked to see the score Nawras got on that sheet, of course it was a perfect score. Damn. This employee of Nawras was also the event’s host, Nawras’s representative that received their trophy, and a member of the jury. How crazy is that?

The judgement process for the Oman Web Awards was nothing unexpected, a very shallow exercise by random people that had no apparent qualification, I have a big part of the scores, some were unbelievable biased (Indian judge gives Indian sites better scores), some were totally insane (websites using the same forum software were getting different scores in the technology category?), some were totally irrelevant (nicest websites got the highest score in the interactivity criteria when they had no interactive content), and so much other crap. I cannot believe that I was supposed to a validator and I had no right to validate any of these scores.

I could not imagine myself being part of this joke, I instantly open up my word processor and wrote a letter saying that I cannot be part of this because it is not what I expected it to be, (Did they REALLY want me to check that the scores on the screen are the same as those on the paper?!), I said that I do not know how this could ever guarantee any transparency. And that’s how the letter ended, Transparency, full stop.

The Oman Web Awards does not reward design, arts, or creativity. It is a business event for corporates to add another award to their wall of trophies, and another reason for Khimji, Lexus Oman, and Nawras to make a new press release. It is a shame that many little website owners thought that this was a real proper awards, paid money to join, and then got nothing in return (not that the bigger winners got anything in return anyway).

I cannot think of how this could ever be a meaningful competition when it is totally based on the wrong concept, if you want to celebrate design, arts, and creativity, you reward the DESIGNER, not the owner that did nothing but pay the money. The judgement process should be open to the public, making random people you call judges give out scores on their own in their little offices is wrong, nobody knows on what basis these people give out their scores, the jury should be able to meet up and discuss their scores, say why someone deserved to win and why others lost. And yeah, maybe you should check that the judges are not participating in the competition before asking them to decide who wins.

Ha ha ha ha ha !! HEIGHTS!! lolzzzz
  • Blue Chi
Suchita, thanks for telling me about my rights on what to write on my blog. I'll make sure I apply for your approval before I post next time on my blog.
  • suchita
If you are against the event you have no right to ask any questions if you still believe in it there are proper channels and proper manner to ask these questions through the website. This is definitely not the platform. No one has denied giving you any answers unless you haven't attempted. Last of all I am done with you.
  • Blue Chi
Suchita, you are a very strange person. I think that you are confused, or maybe something is seriously wrong with you. I am obviously against the event, what did you think that this post was about, you?
  • indo_oman
Guys..came accross this on the net!
By the Way....the fullform of ABS is Advanced Business Solutions (Yes, THE great ABS).....To know more about an organisation, you need to ask d employees is what is believed!

So get a 1st Hand Experience on what SUCHITA had to herself say on her firm!

  • indo_oman
And ya.....I have not understood wat u r trying to indicate from ds senselss poem!! So SPEAK UP & be upfront instead of sendin hidden messages (Which only u can depict)ask me directly!!
And ya, dont ask me who I am as if yoiu come to know who I am ......well, lets not get into it!
  • indo_oman
Ms. Suchita, our target being the event or not, our target being the betterment of the awards or not, our target to showup on this blog or not is not the subject or the issue! You have very clearly diverted away from the Q's I had asked you as a spokesperson which in itself is a Question mArk!
Instead of coming to conclusions on your end about WHY we are here & what v r up2 u shud have answered r Q's....Were they that difficult? C'mon its a metter of TRANSPARENCY!! When u charge sum1 for sumthing & publish it in the papers, its a public entity & v r liable to ask u Q's! Its sad that ITA has gone to bed & has lost its so called SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY!
  • suchita
Thank you very much blue chi atleast now you wrote the exact intensions of you and indo oman. Maybe indo oman will surely get his answer which I had mentioned it in my first reply. Your target was the event, sad to know that.
  • Blue Chi
Suchita, Instead of responding to the clear questions of indo_oman above, you are irritating us with your weird posts.

I am not sure if you have noticed that nobody here cares about you or your event. The OWA 200*7* (which was held in March 200*8*) was another stupid celebration, we did not care about participating, attending, or even posting about it. Thanks!
  • suchita
Do you know there are times when I feel that I am a waste and cannot do anything good. But I have found there are people who are an utter waste than me. Who do not even know how to swallow a spoon fed food. HA HA. And believe me they will remain waste in their entire life because creativity of any form is not just formation but also destruction, It is you who has to decide whether to use it for formation or for destruction. The people who choose destruction always remain destroyed and the people who choose formation always remain POPULAR.
  • suchita
Hey indo oman, I would like to share this with you, which I had composed long back, for this I am sure I donot need your name.

    Will to Kill

    --------------

    Power is to kill

    Strength is to will

Will to kill doesnot kill the will

so will not to kill is the strongest will

make the will for poverty kill

make the will for homicide kill

make the will for corruption kill

but make no will for human kill

because there is a way for every will

but no way for a kill

so will to kill doesnot kill the will

will not to kill is the strongest will.
  • indo_oman
Ms. Suchita, you not able to ans the above q's itself is a rubber stamp on what we all have to say!
    Good Going!!

I will reveal my name...& I will do so in style.....just waitin for d award ceremony 2007!!
  • suchita
First of all. Suchita never answers to people who cannot stand by their words. Secondly Mr. Gutsy with sooooooooooo many Q's before asking these questions REVEAL your name.
  • indo_oman
Ok Suchita, we agree what you have to say & I will take all my words back, but can u ans the following Q's?
Should there not be a BACKEND support after the awards so that the "lost" companies know where they have gone wrong?? (WHen I had asked for support, though I am a winner, I was told "Judges decesion is final, when I was ONLY comparing my WON website & a website in the same category which had lost (The lost website was yes, BETTER than mine!)

    2. Howcum the OWA sleeps the whole year & nothing is heard about it & suddenly its time to EARN so wake up?! Dont u guys have any Responsibility in your off peak season?

    3. Why is there no support from your end after OWA is over & its time for PAn Arab Awards?? Is it because they dont PAY you for it?

    4. Why has it been said that OWA winners are eligible for Pan Arab Awards when any TOM, DICK & HARRY can enter PAWA with/without OWA winning or even REGISTERING for OWA??? Is this not a FILTHY SCAM?

    5. As Blue Chi says, howcum Non Arabic speaking people can judge Arabic websites? Or r u guys providing them withan ARABIC CRASH COURSE??

    6. Who has the final verdict for the scores? DONT you DARE say its the Validators!! Last year & the previous year it was ABS!! WHY ? Who has given them the authority to play around with an "Award Ceremony" who has liberalised them to judge??

    7. What involvement is there from PAN Aram Commitee apart from the STUPID & NONSENSICAL speech on the last day?

    8. Howcum Categories suddenly comeup? Arenot the categories supposed to be DECLARED before the starting of the registration process?? Comon..you know what I am indicating!

    9. How do you justfify the cost per website registration?

    10. How are u "Advocating Growth & Local Talent"? By havin a one night award ceremony & not even letting anyone know what went behind the "Awards?

Guys....help me ask MS Famous & OWA saviour more Q's!
  • indo_oman
Gosh this is gettin hillarious now!
THE famous Suchita huh? Famous in what aspect? Her "Marketing Strategies" to rope in "Contestants" in this award?? Or her "Oh your website dint win, let ABS (& now SJS handle it) & u can see the difference next year (Gives her FLIRTY smile)!! I am saying this as we had experienced the same in the past & so did THREE other "Contestants"!!

Just because we rae talking about the scam..the blog has suddenly become a SPAM! Great

So what is the scene this year, how many "Contestants" Targetted in OWA 2007?? We pity ALL OF THEM!
  • suchita
I agree with you 'blue chi' your blog will not be popular with the name 'Suchita' but with the Medium you and me are passionate about and that is 'WEB'.
When I was at ABS I was given an opportunity as a caretaker of a baby Oman Web Awards and I accepted it because I always loved this medium. In its 2nd year it did suffer a lot of health problems due to lack of support. Now the care takers are changed and they are SJS they have nurtured it very well this year and I am very proud about it. There is a good response this year in terms of supporters and participants as well from different sectors because of SJS. New categories are introduced not only Automobile which was last year but this year we have Oil & Gas, HSE (Health Safety and Environment), Hospitality, Media Services & Event Management and Retail they all are introduced not because of Suchita but because of growing sectors as well as growing economy in Oman and by SJS. Suchita was a caretaker only for past two years, the only difference I made was I looked for the right guardians to take care further and they are SJS because I loved my baby and this Medium. The reason I am responding to your blog is because you too are passionate about this Medium which can be easily seen through this blog, We do need more and more Omanis to come ahead and grow this event further not just with criticism but with the right attitude to support through suggestions as it is Oman Web Awards whose objectives are.

*Promote the spirit of innovation and creativity.

*Raise the standards of web design and websites.

*Advocate growth & development of local talents

    *Promote intellectual property awareness.

*Encourage all sectors to become involved in the digital economy.

Oman Web Awards is a medium to put Oman and Omanis on a World Map.
  • Blue Chi
Conceptual, yeah, I should talk more about "popular people like Suchita" to make my blog more popular.

OF ALL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, I should talk about SUCHITA because she is VERY POPULAR and people would come read my blog because of her POPULARITY.

Thanks for the advice, but you seem to have a misunderstanding about what this blog is, because I do know what you mean by 'the people of this blog' *as per* the latest news, and I have NO IDEA what the 'latest news' are.

And who is that 'we' in the "as far as we know she is not involved" sentence?
  • Conceptual
Here is the real inside story. This blog itself is a spam blog. Because as per the latest news the people from this blog itself are involved in the judgement and blowing it up out of proportion and targeting good people like suchita, who are only involved since the inception sticking truely to the objective. By the way as far as we know she is not at all involved this year.

Blue chi your idea is just to make this blog popular with the popular events and popular people like suchita.
  • indo_oman
Noone can do anything about Oman Web Awards as the foundation stone when it was layed was ignited wrongly! You are to shoulder the blame as you have constantly been with Oman Web Awards somehow or the other! Oman Web Awards is as Blu Chi rightly says a SCAM & its high time people like you who are actively involved since its inception are questioned!
I sincerely wish there should be an Inquiry Commission behind Oman Web Awards since its inception whose report should be published for the laymen to see!

Its nothing against you Suchita, its against the SCAM which you are involved with!
  • indo_oman
Hey guys just chk out Oman Web Awards press releases & articles since its inception! Ul see that apart from change in years from 2005 to 2006 to 2007 everything else remians just the same...each & every word! Doesnt this also show how uninterested ABS is in all this apart from the "Cost per Website Participation" !! Any comments?
  • suchita
Why are you so much in love with me.

    Stop shooting from my shoulders.

If you feel you can make any difference for the development of the initiative of Oman Web Awards, please talk to.

    President - PAWA

    presenters - ABS

    Patronage - ITA

    Organisers - SJS

Suchita is only a peace lover.
  • indo_oman
Hie, I have been followin your comments & I feel that you SHOULD speak to the media about it! Not just are these awards senseless but also the person involved "Suchita" too is. You will be surprised to know that she recently "left" ABS & has now joined SJS which coincidentally are the event organisers this year!
Donot be surprised if SJS gets the "Best Web Designer" award this year!! Also, does anyone know that all the winners in last year's "Automobile Category" were CLIENTS of ABS? And above all where did this category comeup all of a sudden from ?

Were these awards AUDITED for authentication? MOst surprisingly, ITA was so closely involved with such an award!! Whom to blame & why aint the govt bodies doin anything to curb such NONSENSICAL & Hoax Award Ceremonies?
  • Blue Chi
Dear Evilio, I did not contact any magazine or newspaper in Oman because I do not think that traditional media outlets would publish such facts and opinions.
  • EviliO
    This was amazing!

I participated in 2005, i got the GOLDEN award. But i also promised my self not to participate again in this scam. That is exactly what i did.

I don't even know which store did i keep the trophy in.

Suchita, i advise that you get a grip on your self and read what you posted again. After that, make some sensible advices to the office you are working for.

Although i won the golden award, as mentioned in previous posts in here, my site was never mentioned in the newspaper. When i called and asked for the reason. The answer was "We do not know who takes care of that". That's when the last piece of the jigsaw fitted.

Blue-chi, did you send this to any newspaper or magazine? If not you should.
  • Blue Chi
Dear Suchita, thanks for your comment. I believe that my post is very clear in regard to the fact that the Oman Web Awards event is very poorly judged to say the least, there is no transparency (nobody knows on what basis these websites won the competition), the judges are not qualified and are selected randomly (I myself convinced you to become a validator without you knowing who I was or without you even asking to see my qualifications), it does not reward website designers (nobody knows who actually designed the website of any of the companies that won), and the list goes on.

I have proof on everything I said, list of participants, scores, and judges names.
  • sensation
    Well what a shame!

Power is always mis-used and what makes it even worse is that when don't qualify to judge others are being responsible of making judgments! I'm talking about those two Indian ameigos' judging Arabic sites!

Now the role they have given you is really funny and meaningless! It has all been cooked from the very beginning! loool! Actually I was surprised how they accepted you to be one of the judges but the email they sent just said it all!
  • iamnasra
"I cannot think of how this could ever be a meaningful competition when it is totally based on the wrong concept, if you want to celebrate design, arts, and creativity, you reward the DESIGNER, not the owner that did nothing but pay the money. I dont follow this award but yeah you got point in there
  • MMK080
LOL! interesting post, Blue. I don't know how they can get away with something like this.
