Martin Lukes: Who Moved My Blackberryâ„¢ – By Lucy Kellaway

July 17th, 2006 | Posted in Books

I’ve recently gone back to my books, I finished reading this book today, it’s a hilarious novel told as a collection of emails sent over a whole year by a high executive in an international company. The book tells the story of Martin Lukes as he practices intra-company politics, interacts with his virtual life coach, cheats on his wife, etc..

I found this book while shopping around in a bookstore in the ‘Must-Read’ section of the bookstore, and I can’t agree more with that now that I finished it. This is a very a quick read, the book is less than 400 pages long and could be easily gotten into, it is not to be taken too seriously as it was all written in a spirit of satire. I really loved the storytelling, the book is a series of emails, from a first person perspective, you don’t even get to read the reply of the other person except at very rare circumstances. I think that Lucy Kellaway did a great job with Who Moved My Blackberry, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a humorous light read related to company or office life.

I have four novels that I am supposed to read and three technical books that need to be completed as well, however, my next book is most likely to be JPod.

A book about a contract analyst hmmmm. It could either be a big franchise, u know, first a novel then a big hollywood movie adaptation then the novel getting translated into 80 different languages OR it could be the biggest failure to ever grace the face of the earth as a novel.

I think a story about a contract analyst is going to be ... oops the phone is ringing, gotta go get that.

Thanks on replying Nash, the book is a fiction novel, it did not happen in real life.

Thanks on your reply degoat, I hope that you do give it a try!

MMK080, the book has no narration in the traditional sense, it is purely a collection of emails and text messages. You can think of it as a play, but then in a play you have the dialogue text of more than one person, where in this book, you only read the out-going emails and not the replies of other people. It sounds really weird, but it did make a very funny book.

Anyway, I don't understand why nobody ever writes a book about a contract analyst, only lawyers lawyers lawyers. :P

I don't really get it. Does it have a narrative or is it just a story told through emails that the high executive sent out to people?

and, dude, it is good to know you're remotely enjoying your time in Oman.

I am currently reading: The Lincoln Lawyer. It's a really engaging story about a criminal defense attorney who only defends client with money money money without really caring about innocence.

anyway, I will hopefully see you sooner than later.
